TALKING GREEN EMERALDS

According to the GIA the most valuable emeralds are bluish-green to green hue with a nice medium to medium-dark tone. Because they usually shape up as six-sided prisms, they're a natural fit for that classic emerald cut. Keep in mind, that emerald colour is judged from the face-up view.

Now, most emeralds have inclusions (internal clarity characteristics) and blemishes (little marks on the surface) that you can spot without any fancy gear.

Colour Is the most important quality factor for emerald

The most desirable emerald colours are bluish green to pure green, with vivid colour saturation and tone that’s not too dark. The most-prized emeralds are highly transparent.

Colombian emeralds get their colour primarily from trace amounts of chromium. They have a blue undertone.
Zambians get their colour from iron. They normally have a dark undertone.
Brazilian emeralds get their colour mainly from traces of vanadium.

Clarity refers to the inclusions

Emeralds typically contain inclusions that are visible to the unaided eye. Eye-clean emeralds are especially valuable because they’re so rare.

Cut is one of the most important factors in appearance

The most popular cut is the emerald shape due to the original shape of the crystals. Well cut stones maximize the beauty of the colour while minimizing the impact of fissures, and creating a bright, lively stone.

Carat

Talking about Carat Weight! When it comes to emeralds, size varies greatly. From colossal gems showcased in museums to tiny treasures found in private collections, there's a wide spectrum. Take Sandawana emeralds, for instance, hailing from Zimbabwe. Despite their petite size, as small as 1 mm square, they boast a vivid green hue that's hard to miss. Typically, these cut stones range from 0.05 to 0.25 carat, with larger ones rarely exceeding 1.50 carats. So, whether you're into grand statements or subtle elegance, there's an emerald size just for you!
